Acai. The Amazon reveals one of its secrets.

In Biotivia’s quest to find and source the very best natural remedies that mother nature provides, they come across many products that have been unworthy of the Biotivia ‘stamp of approval’. But every so often they find an ingredient that almost seems too good to be true. This can be said of Acai, a super berry from deep within the Amazon rain forest.

The Biotivia scientists first heard about this when one of our researchers came back from a vacation to South America 4 years ago. The Acai palm has been used by the Riebeirihnos, the Amazons ‘river dwellers’, for hundreds of years to alleviate pains. In fact it has been the key ingredient in many of their herbal remedies and native medicines.

Acai is cultivated deep within the forests and always no further than 25ft (8 metres) away from the river banks. This is because the tidal water feeds the Acai plant twice a day with rich minerals and other nutrients from the mighty Amazon.

The berry itself is mainly seed, but the 10% which is pulp has been found to contain a huge amount of protein, fibre, vitamin A, calcium and iron. The Acai berry also has a great amount of antioxidant power.

An astounding fact regarding Acai relates to Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, or ORAC value. This is the method of measuring levels of anti-oxidants in foods to determine the nutritional benefits. Recently a study proved that Acai has an ORAC score five times more than another famous superfood: the blueberry.

The reason it has taken Biotivia four years to announce their Acai supplement is that there were some serious technical challenges to overcome before they were willing to put our name on any Acai product.

The ‘Dark Drupe’, as Acai has been dubbed, has to be processed within 24 hours of picking as it quickly loses its health benefits and nutritional properties.
